About Me

My name is John and I'm based in the UK (just south of Manchester). So, you may be thinking, what am I doing, creating a website all about Melbourne?

Well, as I state on the homepage, I and my partner, Alison, have been fortunate enough to visit this great city a total of five times, so far. Every January since 2009, we have boarded our long-haul flight, escaping from the British winter.

In 2008, I'd inherited a reasonably large sum of money and, as Alison's fiftieth birthday was coming up in the January of 2009, I wanted to do something special for her - and I had the funds.

Now, I knew she had ambitions to see the Great Barrier Reef and also stand on the glacier at Franz Josef in New Zealand. I decided to help her realise those ambitions.

So, where does Melbourne come in? Well, we decided, as we were flying halfway round the world, we'd stop off at Australia's second largest city, simply because Alison had an aunt and two cousins living there. As luck would have it, too, my best mate from my university days was now a Melbourne resident and I would be able to meet up with him.

So, on our first visit, the itinerary consisted of a mere four days in Melbourne, two weeks in New Zealand and one week in Port Douglas, just north of Cairns, in the state of Queensland.

During those four days, however, our love affair with Melbourne was kindled and we had to keep going back (even though we kept saying every time was the last time). On each subsequent visit, we stayed in the city for longer periods, culminating in our most recent visit, 2013, when we spent the whole of our three weeks there.

Me on the Princess Bridge, Melbourne

Here's me standing on the Princess Bridge, with the Yarra River in the background, in 2009. I'd been advised to get a traditional Aussie hat, as there was a heatwave on the go. That was the year when temperatures were in the mid 40s, a prelude to those terrible bushfires that culminated in Black Saturday.

When I'm not gallivanting around Melbourne, I earn a living, back in the UK as a piano teacher. For many years, I was a gigging musician (keyboard/vocalist), but, these days, at the wrong side of 60, I think I'm a bit old to be lugging heavy equipment about. As most piano lessons have to take place outside of school and work hours, most of my work is late afternoon onwards, thus leaving most of my daytimes free to do things like work on this website.

Me at my friend's house in McKinnon, Melbourne

Here's me again, in 2011 (with a slightly better expression on my face this time), posing in the front room of my friend's house, in the Melbourne suburb of McKinnon, a short train ride south of the city.

So, how many more visits to Melbourne can we manage? That inheritance money won't last forever. The latest situation is that we're definitely not going in 2014. But, come 2015, who knows? And, if we return, that'll mean a lot more material for this website, which I sincerely hope you'll enjoy taking a look at.

Happy browsing!
